Cascara sagrada is a natural laxative that comes from the reddish-brown bark of the Rhamnus purshiana tree.

Cascara sagrada is one of the few herbs approved as an over-the-counter drug by the U.S. FDA (Food and Drug Administration). It is available on the market in its dried form; dried bark can be made into tea, although it tastes bitter. In its fresh form – fresh cascara bark should not be used, as it can cause bloody diarrhea and vomiting.

Cascara Sagrada is one of the most common herbal rather powerful laxatives. It is appeared to influence the motility of the colon, inhibition of stationary and stimulation of propulsive contractions. It also stimulates peristalisis, active chloride secretions and increases water and electrolyte content. The component which is responsible for such laxative effects isanthroquinones. These ingredients eventually trigger contractions in the colon (called peristalsis), which causes the urge to have a bowel movement.

Other notable constituents in cascara sagrada are hydroxyanthraquinone glycosides called cascarosides (A, B, C and D, which account for about 70% of the total with other glycosides in minor concentrations), they exhibit a cathartic effect that also induces the large intestine to increase its muscular contraction (peristalsis), causing a bowel movement.

Some more important constituents include resins, tannins, and lipids which make up the majority of the other bark ingredients.Along with such properties cascara is also believed to improve the muscle tone of the colon walls.

Alder buckthorn’s bark is another substance used but it necessary to first dry it and store it for a year at least as the fresh barks are too strong and can be toxic.

Alder buckthorn has been used as a cathartic laxative in northern and central Europe, including England, for centuries.

Alder buckthorn is high in anthraquinone glycosides. Resins, tannins, and lipids make up the bulk of the bark’s other ingredients. Anthraquinone glycosides have a cathartic action, inducing the large intestine to increase its muscular contraction (peristalsis) and increasing water movement from the cells of the colon into the feces, resulting in strong, soft bowel movements.³ It takes six to ten hours for alder buckthorn to act after taking it by mouth.

Juniper berries promote the overall health of the urinary system. It strengthens and  detoxifies the urinary tract, kidneys and the bladder. It is an excellent cleanser but should not be used for a prolonged period of time as it can cause overtaxing in the kidneys.

Juniper Berry is an effective diuretic and antiseptic that not only promotes the flow of urine, but also treats infection of the urinary tract at the same time.

Juniper Berry promotes urine flow and helps to clear the kidneys, bladder and prostate of toxic wastes, while at the same time helping to combat urinary infections in both men and women. It is an effective diuretic and antiseptic that not only promotes the flow of urine, but also treats infection of the urinary tract at the same time.  As a diuretic, the herb stimulates the kidneys and bladder to get rid of retained and excess water (possibly also helping to treat obesity).  Juniper increases the filtering of waste products by the kidneys and helps to expel prostate sediment and gallstones.  It is also thought to dissolve kidney stones. The herb helps to prevent the crystallization of uric acid in the kidneys, retaining it in a solution and passing it in the urine; this is of great benefit to those suffering from gout (a condition marked by painful inflammation of the joints caused by deposits of uric acid).

As an antiseptic, it  is helpful in combating bacteria, including bladder and urinary infections, such as cystitis, urethritis, prostatitis, vaginitis and inflamed kidneys, etc.
